Amsterdam has long been associated with innovative art, architecture and design. From the prolific paintings of Rembrandt to the charming 17th-century canal-side houses, the Dutch capital is a must-see for all appreciators of creative living. Recently, the city has become home to some seriously eye-catching and forward-thinking showrooms and studios. After visiting Amsterdam recently, here are three of our current favourite design showrooms…
Situated on the trendy Westerstraat, Moooi (Dutch for Beautiful), is a furniture company creating ‘proactive yet classic pieces’. Their designs are minimal, but cosy and welcoming all the same, especially their understated grey sofas. The showroom itself is bedecked with antique-inspired decorations against canvases of baroque interiors. These help to set off the modern, unfussy styles of the furniture and moreover, create a pleasing contrast to the viewer.
On the other side of town, on Staalstraat, is Droog, a conceptual design company. The aim of the company? To ‘focus on matters that affect society and its people’. The space is home to a cafe, event areas (including a ‘Fairy Tale Garden’ and library), one-bedroom hotel, and the studio itself. Each area has been crafted with a unique approach, for example, The Courtyard, which is in fact indoors but creates the illusion of the outdoors by the placement of windows and blue sculptural birds on the ceiling.
Displayed against the white and beige walls of the collective interiors space, Design Post Amsterdam, is an array of candy-coloured furniture from the family-owned business, Arper. Specialising in chairs, tables, and furnishings for homes and offices alike, the company’s ethos is centred around six elements; balance, family, intuition, light, colour, and play. They certainly bring fun to the everyday necessities. We particularly liked the crazily long, curved sofas and the hot-pink dining chairs.
