Tips for Event Planning: Making your event stand out

When it comes to organising your own event, there are simple enough guidelines to stick to in order to achieve success (we’ve written a few ourselves!). But what if you’re looking to make your event stand out from the rest? To obtain a truly unforgettable Gatsby-esque party or get together, you’ll need some slightly more refined tools under your belt. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite tips below. After ticking these off, the only thing you’ll need to do is pop your party gear on and enjoy yourself.

Pick a unique location

Your location is the canvas that your event should stand out from. So, with that in mind, think about the size and style of your desired space. Do you want to wow your guests with a large, sprawling venue? Or perhaps leave an impression in your guest’s mind by hosting your event in a space that’s more intimate and low-key? By choosing a unique location, you’re already standing out from the typical, run-of-the-mill corporate function rooms that we’re all so used to seeing.

Make use of the space

Take advantage of your location’s assets and quirks. Whether it’s a small or large space, the best types of events are ones that use every square inch of the venue to the best possible use. If your space has a kitchen – use this as an opportunity for guests to make their own cocktails, or offer a DIY food course. Does your location have a retro telephone in the hallway? Or maybe a wonky staircase? Highlight these intricacies rather than trying to blend them away.

Perhaps your venue has an outdoor area. If so, this is a brilliant way of doubling up on space and will be particularly appealing to guests in the warmer months. Try and maintain the same style that you had indoors, outdoors, for example, use the same furniture. This creates a sense of continuity and will make it feel more natural for guests to flow between the outside and inside spaces.

Create photo opportunities

As cynical as it may seem, without photos, we sometimes forget the finer details and the happiness felt during a party or special occasion. So, to ensure your event and the effort that has gone into doesn’t fade into oblivion, why not set up specific photo opportunities throughout your venue? Selfie mirrors, a luxe sofa in the entrance way, or an eye-catching backdrop are all ways of prompting guests to get snapping and sharing their memories with friends and family.

Include floristry & plants

As a final touch to the decor, greenery and floristry can really make your surroundings pop. Just take a look at this urban jungle themed event we helped with here. Finishing touches like this help your event to stand out. Potted plants and vases of huge, colourful flowers can enhance your event’s theme and furthermore helps to blend the outside and inside (as we mentioned in point two).

Don’t forget statement furniture

It wouldn’t be a top-notch event without some seriously good looking furniture. It would be a shame, after all, to use plain chairs and tables after all the effort that’s been put into the venue and decor. Bright colours (particularly with sofas and armchairs) and interesting textures and textiles (particularly with tables and bars) is a good starting point when it comes to picking out statement furniture items. If in doubt, you can never go wrong with a scallop pink armchair or a sleek, metallic table.
